Mechanical modelling of human patella strength upon orthopaedic screw insertion

There has been a growing interest in measuring the kinematics of the human knee to understand factors that play a role in knee pain. Specifically, an area that needs to be researched is patellar kinematics during Total Knee Replacements. A novel tracking system has been developed to measure kinematics intraoperatively. Part of this tracking system attaches directly to the patella using bone screws. The aim of this project is to create a finite element model of the patella to predict integrity of the bone following the insertion of these screws. The goal of the model is to determine if the location of the tracker screws is optimal from a mechanical resilience perspective. Time and facilities permitting, there may be an opportunity for the student to conduct in-lab mechanical validation tests on human bone material. This project offers interested students an opportunity to refine their mechanical and modelling skills, and gain exposure to applied problems in the biomedical field.
