ASCEND is a modelling language as well as application program, aimed at allowing engineers and scientists to readily solve complicated systems of non-linear algebratic equations. It also provides capability for solving differential and differential-algebraic equations. Originally developed in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie-Mellon University, its original focus was on chemical process simulation. In the Solar Thermal Group, we have adapted it to solve thermal energy system problems, with the addition of a new graphical user interface and new reusable model components for heat exchangers, turbines, solar collectors, weather data and sun position. A range of more accurate thermodynamic property correlations have also been added (see also FPROPS and freesteam for details of these).
