New appointments: Alan Weimer and Wojciech Lipiński
We are delighted to announce two new appointments to the ANU
Solar Thermal Group.
Prof Alan Weimer has commenced an adjunct appointment
as a Chair in Solar Thermal Engineering.
Prof Weimer is the H T Sears Professor in the Department of Chemical &
Biological Engineering, University of Colorado, Boulder.
He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado
in 1980 before moving to industry to work for the Dow Chemical Company
until 1996 when he returned to academia at the University of Colarado.
Al has extensive experience in renewable energy systems,
particularly those based on concentrated solar energy, and atomic layer
deposition. He has an extensive publication record but has combined
that with significant success in commercialisation of his research
through several startups, including Copernican Energy and ALD Nanosolutions.
Dr Wojciech Lipiński will commence later this year
in his new position as Associate Professor in Solar Thermal Engineering.
Dr Lipiński is an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
He received his Doctor of Technical Sciences degree
in Mechanical and Process Engineering from ETH Zurich in 2004
and his Habilitation in Energy Technology from ETH Zurich in 2009.
Dr Lipiński's research interests are in the area of thermal
and thermo-chemical sciences applied to novel energy conversion
technologies with a focus on renewable and clean energy.
His current activities include development of high-temperature
processes that utilize concentrated solar radiation for renewable
fuel production and power generation. He uses numerical and experimental
techniques to study heat and mass transfer phenomena in heterogeneous
reacting flows, in particular radiative heat transfer.
Dr Lipinski is a scientific committee member for several conferences
and workshops in the field of solar energy, a referee for several
scientific journals and an Associate Editor of the
Journal of Solar Energy Engineering.
