Visit from President Nasheed of the Maldives

President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives visited the ANU Solar Thermal Group on 3 June. His government announced in March 2009 that that his country would spend 110M USD a year to become the first country in the world with a zero-carbon economy by 2019. The president and his entourage were seeking information about solar thermal concentrator technology as one possible approach to convert their current 0.30 USD/kWh diesel-generator-based energy system to renewables. The group was shown the new SG4 500 m2 Big Dish, as well as the ammonia thermochemical storage system.
